A field-verified in situ method for remediation of toxic metals

Heavy metals are natural components of the Earth’s crust but they cannot be degraded or destroyed. Unfortunately, the presence of even low concentrations of some heavy metals and metalloids (such as Arsenic, Zink, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead) can lead to poisoning. Heavy metal poisoning could result, for instance, from drinking-water contamination and is harmful to human health. The treatment of heavy metals is therefore important, particularly considering their persistence in the environment.

Heavy metal contaminants can be found in groundwater for natural and/or anthropogenic reasons. For example, inorganic arsenic is naturally present at high levels in the groundwater of a number of countries, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, China, India, and Mexico. Nevertheless, many industrial activities such as industrial effluents, mine tailings, application of fertilizers, etc. lead to release of heavy metals into groundwater resources, where they become mobile with water and may reach other areas.

What we do

ColFerroX offers in situ technology for immobilization of toxic metal pollutants in groundwater. Using our highly innovative ironoxide we implement adsorption barriers in aquifers to stop the spreading of pollutants. Small particles with high surface area are injected into aquifer using easy techniques. The small size allows the particles to travel several meters away from injection point, where they precipitate and form a large underground adsorption barrier. The high surface area provides enough adsorption capacity to immobilize heavy metals for decades.
